As a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, you know that assaults happen each and every day. Whether you live in a high crime area or not, it’s happening to someone out there on a daily basis. While you don’t wish that kind of pain on anyone, you also don’t want it to be you. What can you do, as a woman, to protect yourself further? There are plenty of ways you can bolster your army and prevent sexual assaults and other crimes from happening to you. Here are a few ideas to help you move in the right direction—away from harm.

Idea 1: Take A Self Defense Class

You can’t always prevent what happens to you and what other people will do when you are around, but you can control how you react to the situation. Take a self-defense class to give yourself the confidence and skills to react in the proper manner if you are ever approached in a way in which someone intends to harm you. The classes are fun and a good workout, plus they give you priceless skills to last a lifetime. With any luck, you’ll never need them, but it never hurts to have them.

Idea 2: Take Precautions Regularly

As a woman, you want to feel independent, but you also want to be safe. Examine your situation when you are traveling somewhere and make sure you are taking regular precautions. If you have to walk somewhere at night, make sure you’re not alone. Tell other people where you are going and when you are going to arrive so if you are late, they will know something is wrong. Carry mace or another defensive item with you and in your hand when you are out somewhere that you’re not comfortable. It’s not fun to have to think this way, but it can get you where you need to go safely.

Idea 3: Examine Your Home’s Safety

Not every assault happens when you are out and about in the world. The scariest events occur within the home, where you feel the safest. In order to prevent anyone from entering your home uninvited, keep your doors and windows locked at night. You may also want to check your burglar alarms, if you have them, and upgrade those that are out of date. If you don’t have an alarm, it’s never too late to install burglar alarms. Some alarms are just noise while others feature 24/7 monitoring. There are smart alarms as well that prevent you from walking into your home when something is going on. They can send an alert to an app on your phone when something moves within your house when you are away.
