Ensuring Vacation Home Security

If you’re not in your home, it’s hard to ensure that everything is safe: how can you watch over your house if you’re not even there? When you go on vacation this summer, you should be able to relax, unwind, and leave your daily life behind, and trust that your home, belongings, and property are safe and sound. These tips can give you the peace of mind that your home will be just as you left it when you return.

Tip 1: Get A Monitored Home Security System

The next best thing to being at home is installing a home security system. Defend your house against intruders when you are away with door and window sensors. If you are out of town, your network coverage will sound an alarm and alert the authorities that there has been a breach. You don’t have to be there for the security system to do its job, and you can relax and rest easy knowing your home is taken care of.

Tip 2: Program The Thermostat

There’s no need to heat or cool your home to excess if you aren’t there to enjoy the comfortable temperatures. You also don’t want to completely turn your system off. Set your thermostat 4-5 degrees above or below normal. You don’t want the pipes to freeze in the winter or your home to heat up too much and damage things in the summer. You can program the thermostat to return to normal temperatures before you get home, so things are comfortable. You’ll save money and protect your home at the same time.

Tip 3: Be Mindful in Public

While your friends and family members may know where you’ve gone and how long you’ll be gone, you don’t need everyone else to know. Don’t make posts on social media announcing that you’ve left and won’t be back for several weeks. Don’t put a message on the answering machine saying you are out of town. And don’t indicate your time away in an email auto-reply at work. You can make announcements to everyone when you get back and post your vacation pictures all at once when you return. Letting everyone know that you’re gone while you’re away opens you up to intruders looking for victims.

Tip 4: Set Up Automatic Lights

You want to make it look like you are home so set some lights up on timers. You can also install outdoor security lights that turn on when motion activates them. You won’t waste a lot of energy with either of these things and you will be able to easily simulate that someone is home.

Tip 5: Have Neighbors Keep Watch

You never know what’s going to be happening around your home when you are away so inform neighbors how long you will be away let them keep watch of any suspicious behavior. They can pick up your newspaper and pull your trashcan down to the curb and back, so it doesn’t look obvious that you are away for an extended period of time.
